Research ExcellenceThe ISE department has established several areas of research excellence including manufacturing processes, human factors and ergonomics, and operations research. The department is the home of the Institute for Ergonomics and the Engineering Research Center for Net Shape Manufacturing (ERC/NSM). The department's annual research expenditures are in excess of $6,000,000. Primary sources of funding include the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the US Department of Energy, Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation, and industry. Approximately 60% of the research funding is from federal sources and 40% from industry. Research NewsSummer 2011: Ohio State is one of the top research universities Did you know that Ohio State ranks 2nd nationally among all research universities in industry-sponsored research, according to statistics compiled by the National Science Foundation. Overall research expenditures for FY09 totaled $716 million, placing Ohio State seventh among public research universities and 10th among all universities. Research expenditures for FY10 totaled $756 million.
