ISE Welcomes New Faculty Member in Visual Analytics and the Design of Cognitive Tools

Mike Rayo, PhD has accepted a tenure-track position focusing on visual analytics and the design of cognitive tools. Dr. Rayo has been working with ISE as a Senior Lecturer and will begin his appointment as Assistant Professor in August of 2016.  He also currently serves as a scientific advisor in the Department of Quality and Patient Safety at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Mike’s research focuses on improving joint human-machine system performance with a specific focus on auditory and visual display design that increases available information without increasing mental workload. His work in alarm design and management, computerized decision support, and interpersonal communication has been funded by the National Patient Safety Foundation, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the Office of Naval Research. He has published numerous papers on healthcare quality and human factors engineering, and serves on multiple patient safety committees and advisory groups.  He currently teaches two courses: Introduction to Cognitive Systems Engineering and Visual Analytics for Sensemaking.
