Areas of Interest
Dr. Smith is a Professor in the Department of Integrated Systems Engineering at The Ohio State University and a Fellow of HFES. He has received the OSU College of Engineering MacQuigg Award for Outstanding Teaching, the Air Traffic Control Association David J. Hurley Memorial Award for Research in Collaborative Decision Making and the National Aviation Safety - Airline Dispatchers Federation, as well as “best paper” awards in Human Factors and in Clinical Laboratory Science.
He is recognized as a leader in air traffic flow management, airline operations control, collaborative decision making (CDM) and the design of distributed work systems in the National Airspace System. He has extensive expertise in cognitive systems engineering, human factors engineering, artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction, applied to both the design and evaluation of distributed work systems. His latest publication is a chapter focusing on “Making Brittle Technologies Useful” in a just released book on Cognitive Systems Engineering (Smith, P.J. and Hoffman, R.R., eds.).
